Statistics - Polls: What do the numbers tell us?Being Confident

Three Months Before the Election

Things usually are pretty dull for the news business in the dog days of summer, but not this year. The mayoral race has taken on steam. Each candidate is claiming the lead, and the pollsters can't agree on who's right.

Yesterday's Journal-Times poll indicates that Fletcher is in the lead by 20% (margin of error of +/- 5%) with 60% of the vote. However, a poll conducted by the Record News indicates that Higgins is in the lead by 15% (margin of error of +/- 5%) with 55% of the vote. Who's right? Things may become clearer following tomorrow's poll of all registered voters in the state.

Can We Be Confident?
