 A video- and Web-based course on basic concepts of statistics for K-8 teachers; 11 half-hour video programs, course guide, and Web site; graduate credit available Learning Math: Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability is one of five video- and Web-based mathematics courses for elementary and middle school teachers. These courses, organized around the content standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), will help you better understand the mathematics concepts underlying the content that you teach.Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability introduces statistics as a problem-solving process. In this course, you can build your skills through investigations of different ways to collect and represent data, and describe and analyze variation in data. Through practical examples, you will come to understand some statistical concepts, such as data representation, variation, the mean and median, bivariate data, probability, designing statistical experiments, and population estimations. The concluding case studies, divided into grade bands for K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 teachers, show you how to apply what you have learned in your own classroom. The course consists of 10 two-and-a-half hour sessions — nine topic sessions and a classroom case study targeted to the three different grade bands. Each has a half-hour of video programming, problem-solving activities available in print and on the Web, interactive activities and demonstrations on the Web, and questions for class discussion or individual reflection. Statistics As Problem Solving Consider statistics as a problem-solving process and examine its four components: asking questions, collecting appropriate data, analyzing the data, and interpreting the results. This session investigates the nature of data and its potential sources of variation. Variables, bias, and random sampling are introduced. Go to this unit. Video 2.
