Taking a Workshop or Course

Graduate Credit Requirements

Science (EDUC 591C)

View all programs in sequence at your local group site or online, and participate in your site's group activities, discussion sessions, or online activities. If you are taking a workshop or course online, you can interact with others through your workshop or course's specific Web site at Learner.org.

Credit for this workshop (2 credits) or course (3 credits) is at the graduate level. Therefore, coursework should reflect a professional level of expertise and thoughtful reflection for satisfactory completion. To receive a satisfactory grade for this workshop or course, you must submit the following materials (explained in more detail below):

1. A folder/journal documenting your participation in the workshop or course;

2. A reflective paper (2-3 pages for 2 credit workshops, 3-5 pages for 3 credit courses) explaining how workshop or course concepts and/or strategies have influenced your classroom goals or practice; and

3. A classroom project that demonstrates one concrete way you have implemented workshop or course concepts/strategies in your actual classroom or an alternative educational setting.

Folder/Journal: Document the class time spent during the workshop or course by maintaining a folder in which you record your reactions and responses to the ideas and activities presented at your local group site. You should include copies of activity sheets, summaries of group discussions, e-mail messages sent by you as a part of the listserv discussion group, and your answers to questions presented in the series or on the Website. For the 3-credit courses you should include all completed activities, problem sets, and questions for each session, as well as your completed homework problems.

Please Note:
Group Participants: If you are taking the workshop or course as part of a group, please list in your folder/journal the facilitator name and any sponsoring organization.
Individual Participants: If you are taking a 2-credit workshop individually, your folder/journal needs to demonstrate approximately 25-30 hours of participation in the workshop outside of the expected homework time. If you are taking a 3-credit course individually, your folder/journal needs to demonstrate approximately 40-45 hours of participation in the course outside of the expected homework time. You can document informal conversations with colleagues, include your reaction to suggested readings, create an annotated bibliography of course resources, respond to discussion topics with personal journal entries, or anything that will demonstrate your self-initiated and full participation.

Reflective Paper: Write a two to three page reflection paper (for 2-credit workshops) or a three to five page paper (for 3-credit courses) that explains your goals for improving instruction in your school or classroom as a result of participating in the workshop or course, including how your classroom practice may be enhanced. Please use standard formatting, i.e., typed, single-spaced, 12 pt. font, etc. Feel free to write this paper in a form that you find most practical or useful for your work (such as a letter to parents, or a column for a newsletter). NOTE: For Essential Science for Teachers participants, your annotated bibliography fulfills this requirement.

Classroom Project: For your project, choose some techniques that you have seen during the workshop or course and would like to try. Draft an original lesson or unit, or make changes to a current lesson plan that uses these techniques. Put this plan into action in your classroom. (If you are an administrator, you don't have your own classroom, or you are taking this course during the summer session, modify the project to fit your situation. For example, if you are a parent, you may work with your own children. If you aren't a parent, you may choose to work with a small group of children in an informal learning setting. In addition, you may choose to prepare a professional development session/workshop for other teachers or do a reflective paper and lesson plan for a lesson you may implement in the future.) Submit your plan with a description of implementation, evidence of implementation (student work, a performance assessment rubric, anchor papers, etc.), and a written reflection evaluating your results, summarizing your impressions, and suggesting changes for future implementation. NOTE: For Essential Science for Teachers participants, your action research project fulfills this requirement.

Grading will be on a pass/fail basis only.

The following is the grading criteria for the assignments:

Folder/Journal (documents participation, assigned activities, problems, etc.) 30%
Reflective Paper (2-3 pages for 2 credits, 3-5 pages for 3 credits) 30%
Classroom Project 40%
80% = passing

Please send coursework as an email attachment in pdf or doc format to the course instructor. Be sure to mark each item clearly with your name, course number, and semester. (e.g., B.Smith_journal_EDUC_591C_Spr17.doc) Your coursework will not be returned, so please keep a copy for your records.
